TIME & TIDES
The Science of Cardiff Bay for KS2
BRIEF INFORMATION
This project was commissioned by Mid Glamorgan Education Business Partnership to illustrate the Science of Cardiff Bay and to encourage schools and pupils to identify learning resources available when visiting the area. It is aimed at KS2 and can be watched by an unlimited audience. The performance will last one hour.
TEACHER’S COMMENTS
‘Brilliant, kept whole key stage enthralled and interested’ – Penywaun Primary
‘This has been a super introduction to our topic, which was meant to be History/Geography based but now has inspired the children to pose Scientific questions about Cardiff Bay’ – Corneli Primary
THE STORY
The Marquis of Bute was one of the world’s richest men, and a key player in the development of Cardiff Docks. Using his knowledge of engineering he’s managed to send his assistant forwards in time to explore the changes over the past 150 years. He will need the help of some science experts, and your pupils perfectly fit the bill.
During this interactive performance volunteers will take part in demonstrations, and audience activities will help to explain the story, so that children understand and remember the fascinating development of Cardiff Bay.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Pupils will:
  • Apply Scientific Enquiry method to exploring tides
  • Gain an understanding of how the Barrage has changed the environment of the Bay
  • Look at some of the wildlife that has come into the Bay, and how the delicate man-made environment is maintained
  • Examine sustainable building and environmental choices behind materials used in Millennium Centre
  • Explore sound waves and acoustics
  • Look at jobs available in the Bay along with the key skills required to enter each career
  • Look at how scientific developments are represented by artworks around the Bay
  • Look briefly at the history behind the development of Cardiff Docks, and the change into Cardiff Bay
